As President of Dolan Media Management, Tom Dolan has developed a unique management recruitment firm for TV news, digital and marketing. Based in suburban Washington, DC, the company builds and trains management teams for TV stations and all their digital platforms, as well as programming networks, capitalizing on Tom’s 25 years of news experience and over fifteen years as a news consultant and executive recruiter. Tom has helped place some 500 managers.
Previously, Tom had been Vice-President of News & Talent Development for the Texas based Broadcast Image Group from 1996 to 1999. Consultant for a select group of TV stations, he also spearheaded the company’s management recruitment division for TV news and promotion. He helped develop an advanced database for managers and producers, and a university program for young journalists.
Prior to his consulting career, Tom served as Vice-President of News at KSAZ-TV in Phoenix. In addition, Tom spent some twenty years with ABC owned stations in Philadelphia, San Francisco, New York, and Chicago. Tom served as Managing Editor, Assistant News Director and News Director at WLS-TV in Chicago for more than nine years before moving to Phoenix.
During his three years at KSAZ-TV, Tom led the station through one of the most challenging news expansion and affiliation switches following the station’s transition to the FOX network.
ABC hired Tom as a key member of a group that completely rebuilt the news operation at WLSTV in Chicago from last to first place during the 1980’s. In those nine plus years, he was involved in the expansion of news programming from three programs per day to six and designed the format for one of the first hour long AM newscasts.
Tom has produced cutting-edge workshops at national conventions like RTDNA, IRE, PROMAX and UNITY. Tom has developed a specialty from his news days coaching staffs how to turn daily coverage into stronger Investigative content. He has also done many workshops at client stations on industry trends, newscast formatting, multi-platform content, and the News/Marketing-Promotion relationship to ensure that new managers get an effective start.
Active in minority journalist organizations since the early 80’s, Tom promoted diversity in his newsrooms and continues to make it part of his recruiting and consulting practice.
Tom has won both Associated Press and Emmy awards for his news programs and the company web site has been cited with a PROMAX medallion. Tom lives in Frederick, MD with his wife, Jeanne, and their two children.
Mary Dennis joined Dolan Media Management in August of 2019 as Media Recruiting Assistant and Database Manager. Mary maintains the integrity of the company database, downloading daily changes in the TV industry in News, Marketing and Digital. She monitors trends and innovation and who’s driving it. Doing online research to update profiles and help pre-qualify candidates, Mary also logs key online newsletters and blogs for candidate updates and new leads.
Mary has a strong foundation in marketing and creative services and is well versed in client relations. She is the first point of contact with clients, candidates and prospective clients. In her previous role at Wash., D.C. suburban private academy, Loudoun Country Day School, she was responsible for developing and creating graphic and layout communications, with a heavy emphasis on advertising. Those appeared in social media, direct mail and print. She created compelling and innovative designs to reach target audiences, all while maintaining a consistent brand.
Her creative eye and digital media knowledge complement the SmartRecruit™ approach, which contributes to finding the industry’s leading management talent. She has quickly learned how to research trends in TV stations and what to focus on when studying competitive markets. Her advanced skills in Adobe, HTML, and social media will have immediate impact on the company’s marketing searches.
Mary is a graduate of Shenandoah University with a B.S. in Kinesiology. She prides herself on staying up to date with the latest media trends. Mary lives with her husband Jake in Frederick, MD and has another interesting fact in her history — she was the third born in a happy triplet birth.
Jeanne brings an extensive broadcasting and business background to Dolan Media Management. She has 15+ years of history in television with roles in sales, business and human resources.
Jeanne spent most of her career at WLS-TV in Chicago, beginning in 1983 as the Assistant to the Business Manager. Within six months, she was promoted to Business Manager, a position she maintained throughout her ten-year tenure at the station. Jeanne attended DePaul University while in Chicago.
St. Louis is where Jeanne started her TV career with “Television Reps,” a company that represented 75 stations around the country. Her position as a Sales Assistant gave Jeanne valuable experience working with General Managers at the station-level, and the tools for securing commercial airtime contracts from Ad agencies.
Jeanne later moved to Little Rock, Arkansas and worked as the Assistant to Operations Manager at KATV. She was promoted to the same role with the station’s President and General Manager before moving to Chicago.
Using her knowledge of the TV news industry, Jeanne works with Dolan Media Management’s website applicants, builds the company database and is the company Business Manager.
Jeanne is the wife of Dolan Media Management President, Tom Dolan. She has enjoyed being back in the business after taking time off from work to raise the couple’s two children.
